With the redevelopment of Elbo Room moving closer to reality, we turn our attention to the long-shuttered furniture store space next door at 657 Valencia Street.

Having sat empty for over a decade, plans to level the fire-damaged building are now actively under review.

And as envisioned and theoretically massed below, a new five-story building is proposed to rise up to 55 feet in height upon the front of the Mission District site, with four two-bedroom apartments over a ground floor lobby and a new restaurant space fronting Valencia Street.

A grocery had planned to lease the space five years ago, at which point the building’s owners decided to go the redevelopment route. We’ll keep you posted and plugged-in as the plans progress.

  1. Love to see something happening here. Even better would be to do half-floor apartments, go up two stories with density bonus and build 12 apartments (2 affordable).
