The big green wall on the northern edge of the proposed mid-block passage between Tennessee and Third, just north of 23rd Street, isn’t simply for decoration. For on the other side of said wall is the Clubhouse for the Frisco chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.

The club isn’t planning to move. And as far as we know, the wall is as much, if not more, for the Hells Angels as it is for the likely new residents of 1201 Tennessee.

  1. Does anyone know how well the Frisco chapter of the Angels has been infiltrated by Rubbies ? That could make a big difference in the amount of hooliganism that emanates from the clubhouse. They might be perfectly good neighbors.

  2. I recall as a kid just seeing HAs riding up and down highway 101. They were all over the southern part of SF and the northern peninsula. There were especially a lot in the Excelsior area

  3. Ah, the glory of living next door to the Hells Angels. Reminds me of the Great Nordic Biker War.

Normally, the Scandinavian countries don’t see a lot of gun violence, but in the 1990s, the local chapters of the Hells Angels and the Bandidos were engaged in a turf war and members would open fire at members of the other organization at sight resulting in numerous deaths. That presented a bit of an image problem for the Hells Angels and they invited all the neighbors of their Copenhagen clubhouse to an open-house type event to show that they weren’t really bad people. During the event, the Bandidos fired an anti-tank rocket into the clubhouse killing one Hells Angels member and one of the neighbors.

I dunno, but over the past decade the SF chapter of the Hells Angels has been the target of multiple SFPD/FBI raids over drugs/assault/etc, and their president was also shot dead during a bar fight in the Mission district (in 2008…tens of thousands of Hells Angels showed up for his funeral, check youtube). There’s always been plenty of shady activity gong on with the SF Hells Angels, and as you can see there was some pretty high profile stuff just several years ago. So I’m guessing there’s probably still a “hooligan”/criminal element, and it’s not all “Rubbies”.

  5. I walk down the alley past their clubhouse all the time. I think a few of them arrive in Teslas these days. Or the 2-3 Models S’s that park in that alley might just belong to Dogpatch locals and I’m making things up.

    1. There’s one Tesla that parks in there and it definitely does not belong to an HA, or it wouldn’t be parked halfway down the block. So yeah, you’re making things up.

  6. Rubbie == Rich Urban Biker. CEOcycles. VPs on Hogs. Harley able to get my suit and tie off quick enough to don my leather jacket.
No, you’re not tragically unhip but maybe I am since Rubbie is a spin off of the dated term Yuppie. But not as old as NIMBY.

  7. While living in San Francisco a few years back, and loving to walk all over the city, hubby and I ventured out this way and walked right into the Hell’s Angels compound. We slowly shuffled around and walked back the way we came. I don’t think, though, that the Hell’s Angels are as tough as they were in the 50s and 60s.

  8. Not sure about the SF chapter but the SJ chapter still gets involved in a decent amount of mayhem. Here’s an article describing how one member was charged for manslaughter of another member who’s a known killer. Oh yeah, this happened at a funeral of another HA member who was killed by a rival gang member. Total senselessness killings involved in this tapestry of events: three.
