As referenced by a plugged-in reader, the Spanish Infusion School, which was formerly known as Marin Prep, has formally abandoned its plans to convert the “Superior” Mission District garage at 3140-3150 16th Street into a private elementary school.

According to a representative for the project, “the reality of the timeline for building out the school has finally set on the school and they have realized that they do not have the ability to proceed with the project at this time.”

The aforementioned reality appears to have been driven by Planning Department staff having noted that the school’s proposed plans for the conversion of the garage, which is “located within an archaeologically sensitive area,” included a significant amount of excavation, an approach which would have required a formal archaeological review and oversight to proceed.

And as such, the building, which was purchased for a record-setting $8.7 million back in 2013 with plans for condos to rise on its parcel – followed by abandoned plans for a massive 20,000-square-foot restaurant and event space and then the school – is now back in play with an $11 million price tag.

  1. And people say SF’s land-use planning process is broken! clearly the highest and best use of this property is a two-story parking garage

    1. I believe cars are repaired there as well; but regardless, there’s a little more to the story…tho of course you can feel free to say this all irrelevant, and shouldn’t be allowed to happen, anyway.

  2. I for one, sleep better knowing that hypothetical potential arrowhead shards are resting peacefully under decades of petroleum drizzle ebbing through the slab floor. My Ohlone ancestors are at peace, or having their oil changed. One or the other.
