Plans to raze the two-story medical office building at 401 29th Street in Oakland’s Pill Hill neighborhood are in the works. And as envisioned, a four-story building with 83 condos over 2,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space and a garage for 69 cars will rise across the parcel.
And being a block outside the official boundaries of Oakland’s Broadway Valdez District Plan Area, the unit count isn’t included in the over 3,000 units of housing which are either under construction, approved to rise, or in the works around Oakland’s burgeoning Auto Row.
My dentist used to be in a (not as nice…or at least not as big) building across the street from this, and I would always look out on it w/ a certain amount of envy (and this was when I was a little kid, b/f I’d heard “size matters” 🙂 ) Not sure I like having every building replaced with a new condo. (Yes, I know, it’s far from every building, but this seems like it might be more useful as is.)
In a fair comparison, I’d like to know what was on site prior to the two-story medical building.
It was the home of Dr. Edward von Adelung, “scholar, civic leader and one time city health officer…” Gee in SF this kind of rich history could tie up a project for years!
This is a sad building! I’m happy to see it replaced.
How dare we lose the glorious history of 1957?
