AMC is planning to add a “MacGuffins” bar within the AMC Metreon 16 at Mission and Fourth, from which beer, wine and spirits will be sold and allowed to be taken into the theaters. And while the liquor license for the bar has yet to be purchased, and the permits have yet to be secured, San Francisco’s Zoning Administrator has given the proposed addition two thumbs up.
Yay!
Will take a solid third place behind Kabuki and the upcoming Alamo, probably, but sounds like a good way to get people to Moscone center.
“coming summer 2015” says a sign in front of the Alamo. No chance. Try 2017.
As if the hood rats talking through the entire movie weren’t reason enough to avoid this theater.
seriously, why does every place have to serve alcohol. Are we that glued to the need to zone out even further as a society. I thought the movie was the point
i’m sure AMC thinks money is more important than the movie. sell sell sell
“seriously, why does every place have to serve alcohol”
I actually feel more bleh and blah about the increasing need to have more upscale food everywhere. Like the Kabuki, the Mission cinema, Zinzani dinner theater etc, But the same bottom line agreement as you – ‘I thought the movie was the point’
As a Brit, it’s clear to me that the US, and in particular SF fetishizes food far more than the UK, which tends to fetishize alcohol more.
Overheard on the 24 Diviz., “I don’t carry on about my food like I’m getting a blowjob.”
What Mission cinema do you refer to?
If the movie is the point, surely screening out the “hood rats”, which I take it means teens, by screening out the under-drinking-age seems like a good idea.
Great. But I can’t imagine their pour will be as generous as at the Kabuki.
Great name for a bar in a movie theater.
How’s this for the next concept: A liquor bar at your local hospital – for those times when the diagnosis is not so good.
I don’t like the smell of food in a movie theater, now there is a possibility of vomit smells (from those who can’t handle their liquor)?
i have always thought they should serve popcorn at the Board of Supervisors meetings – maybe it’s time City Hall just put in a full time bar……
I’m just happy that the alcohol can’t be given to minors sitting in the darkened theater.
Movie theaters are actually snack bars that show movies if you look at where most of the profits come from. So, it makes sense they will now become actual bars.
Soda, salty hot dogs, popcorn were the high profit makers. They also make for sticky floors and grimey seats. Now, the smell of stale alcohol.
The Chinese consortium Dalian Wanda owns the AMC movie chain. They should make theaters state of the art with high end massaging seats.
I’m hoping they charge a lot for this to avoid the wrong elements coming to the theater to fight/talk/yell, etc. I envision a more upscale quieter experience or am hoping for that at least.
A nice VIP room with nice leather seats reminiscent of high end private home theaters with bottle service is the better choice.
With City Target next door who needs it, they have cold good beer and wine on hand for half the price their goofy little bar will be selling it for. Buy it there and once the light go down pop the lid and drink away.
UPDATE: Plans To Add Booze To Theater Menu Take A Formulaic Turn
