Jefferson Street Design Concept
San Francisco’s draft Fisherman’s Wharf Public Realm Plan and Jefferson Street Design Concepts as presented last Wednesday are now online. The proposed Jefferson Street design “prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists in seven key ways”, which has been the main focus after the rise in the number of cases being brought to law firms regarding collisions :

1. Substantially [widen the pedestrian] footpath.
2. Substantially upgrade design, including higher quality materials, consistent street furniture,
public art, lighting and other amenities that will make the spaces more attractive places to visit and spend time.
3. Create attractive, landscaped spaces for people to stop and sit on a public bench or at a table in front of a restaurant.
4. Narrow street crossings and give pedestrians priority, such as by using raised crosswalks,
whenever practicable.
5. Strengthen connection to the water by widening the pedestrian area adjacent to the historic harbor and potentially creating a pedestrian space that steps down towards the water.
6. Calm traffic so that cars move more slowly and predictably.
7. Provide dynamic parking signage at key vehicular access points.

  1. The new space will come with giant blue crab families. Watch their cute skittering as they snap at children!

  2. Hah– looks like they’ve also replaced the row of skeezy camera shops with apartments. That’s nice. Any chance of it actually happening?
That said, there are some good ideas here.

  3. how about some restaurants that i’d actually like to go to? the fabulous view is being wasted on some real crap. what a waste…..

  4. Just what we need, more local scofflaws hanging out on the sidewalk saying, “Eat me!” to stunned tourists from the Heartland. So much for sit-lie.

  5. Blue crabs are way too much work. I mean, they’re practically calorie neutral. And with that Old Bay crap they put on everything along the mid-Atlantic. Yawn.
    🙂

  6. I love how this plan could be used just about anywhere. Miami, San Diego, Corpus Christi, Charleston. It looks like a giant extension of Pier 39, or some other amusement park.
Yes! Let’s do away with any remnants of local character and replace it with generic, homogeneous condo complexes as far as the eye can see. That way when visitors come to San Francisco, they can feel as if they never left home.
