Having inched up by an upwardly revised 1,800 in May, the net number of people living in San Francisco with a paycheck slipped by 3,000 in June to 553,800. And while it was a relatively minor move last month, keep in mind that employment typically ticks up in June.
At the same time, while there are still 43,400 more employed residents in San Francisco than there were at the same time last year, and 75,100 more than there were in April of 2020, when the pandemic-driven unemployment rate peaked at 13.0 percent, there are still 17,000 fewer employed residents in the city than there were prior to the pandemic and 17,700 fewer people in the labor force (566,800), which is 1,400 fewer than in May.
The number of East Bay residents with a paycheck dropped by 7,700 in June to 1,521,900, which is 84,300 more employed residents than at the same time last year, and nearly 218,000 more employed than in April of 2020, but still 37,600 fewer than prior to the pandemic with 38,000 fewer people in the labor force.
Employment in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties ticked down by 2,200 and 3,800 last month respectively. And as such, while there are 96,100 more employed people in the Valley (1,454,700) than there were at the same time last year, and nearly 193,000 more employed than in April of 2020, there are still 23,400 fewer employed residents than there were prior to the pandemic with 27,700 fewer people in the labor force.
Employment across Marin, Napa and Sonoma counties inched down by a combined 2,300 in June to 436,700. And while there are still 21,100 more employed residents spread across the northern counties than there were at the same time last year, and nearly 70,000 more employed residents than in April of 2020, there are still 17,000 fewer employed residents than there were prior to the pandemic with 18,300 fewer people in the combined labor force (448,100) as well.
As such, the total number of Bay Area residents with a job slipped by 19,000 to 3,967,100 in June, representing 244,900 more employed Bay Area residents than there were at the same time last year, with nearly 556,000 Bay Area jobs having been recovered since the second quarter of 2020, but with 95,000 fewer employed Bay Area residents than there were prior to the pandemic having hit (4,062,100) and over 100,000 fewer people in the labor force with an average unemployment rate of 2.6 percent.
And once again, while the net change in employment last month was relatively minor, Bay Area and county employment typically tick up in June. We’ll keep you posted and plugged-in.
