As we reported earlier this week, the Yellow Cab Cooperative of San Francisco is offering to sell its six-acre headquarters at 1200 Mississippi Street for $16,000,000 and deliver it vacant. While we didn’t have the official word on what the next move for the Cooperative might be, now we do.
From the Cooperative’s President and General Manager:
“Yellow Cab Cooperative of San Francisco is alive and well. Because we have grown from 300 cabs to almost 600 cabs and growing, we are looking for a larger facility or we will build a parking garage at 1200 Mississippi Street. For that reason, we put out a feeler to see if there is interest in purchasing our existing property.
We are embracing all the new technology with new Apps and a growing fleet to better respond to our high demand. We are aligning ourselves to be not only bigger but better in 2014!”
A proposal to build a 7-story parking structure with 603 spaces for the Cooperative on a portion of the site had been considered back in 1999. The site is currently zoned for development up to 65 feet in height.
How about doing both? A building atop a parking garage. The garage would be shared by Yellow Cab and the occupants of the building.
^ and would raise the occupied building portion to be flush with 25th Street (while the building could also provide the “bridge” down the Cesar Chavez level.
That parcel has so much potential for housing and retail. Does the parcel front Pennsylvania?
If you watch the first Dirty Harry Movie there is a murder scene at this spot. The only difference is there is a huge oil tank where today there are Yellow Cabs.
I’m not so sure that this would be a good retail site. It sits back from the main streets which don’t have much retail on them today. Maybe it would be OK for some destination bog box retailer.
Sierrajeff –
How does this site have potential for retail or housing? You drive through a business park to get there and it is right next to the projects – it is also zoned PDR so housing is not allowed –
way over priced – trying to get the city to buy it
Mark Hugret: The gas tank was at Pennsylvania and 23rd, where the current food bank building is. The Yellow Cab lot never had a gas tank (gas bell) on it.
Grossly overpriced. 450 Irwin St is a level 2.35 ac site zoned PDR. It fronts on 7th St, directly across from Mission Bay. It sold to the adjoiner CCA for $8.8M in 2012. These folks are smoking something if they think they can get $16M for their site with no street frontage at the bottom of a slope behind other buildings. Although it has six acres of land, it looks like one-third of that is a steep rocky slope, so the usable size is just four acres or so. This property has no realistic potential for any use other than industrial. The zoning doesn’t allow residential and limits office.
