Having more than doubled in size since plans were reviewed by the public and approved by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors last March, the now 9,000 seat amphitheater to be built upon Piers 27-29 for the 34th America’s Cup is set to be rubber stamped by San Francisco’s Entertainment Commission.
From the commission’s executive director Jocelyn Kane by way of the Chronicle: “It’s already been approved by the city, so there really isn’t much for us to do except work on how loud or how long the concerts will go.”
The amphitheater on Piers 27-29 will host the opening and closing ceremonies for the Cup later this year and as many as 40 concerts in-between.

  1. The force is strong with the NIMBYs this morning…
Lighten up, people. It’s a party, it’ll be here and gone in no time and afterwards we’ll have some nice updated pier facilities that are in an area where no local ever expects a nice, quiet, tourist-free experience anyway.
If Congress really decides to kill Fleet Week and the Blue Angels (another one the NIMBYs are rooting for) then this is an excellent trade at least for 2013.

  2. What sort of performers will be signed to put on a concert for the AC?
Don’t forget Styx; they’ll go over big with the Boomers. PS — I remembered the song first, and then had to look up the artist.

  3. Jimmy Buffett will play at least a week’s worth, and Blues Image could make a comeback. The Dead will no doubt end with an encore of “Ship of Fools.”

  4. Amazing how many posters here and elsewhere seem to have the impression that sailing is purely a sport of rich, old, white men. It’s not.
Most folks I’ve ever been sailing with a very middle class, all working folks that pull the 9-to-5 grind like most everyone else. Many are women, many aren’t white, many aren’t even originally from the United States, many are quite well educated and love a good beer.
The whiners in SF that rail against AC need to get a grip and deal with things that are more important. AC is just another event held in our great city, and we should be happy to have it here.
As somebody said, it’ll come and go quickly enough – it won’t last long, and its footprint will be minor at best. Ask anybody who was “inconvenienced” by the AC World Series late last year… oh wait, nobody was, that’s right…

  5. Gregg – You forgot to mention the development rights that are turned over to the AC organization. That will stay with SF long after the events are over.
