We typically don’t feature properties that are already in contract. But the 1904 Bernal cottage at 5 Winfield to which an addition by Ross Levy was added in 2009 has come up in conversation before, is still contingent, and fits today’s bill, not only in terms of the address but also the outdoor shower and deck on a sunny day.
And yes, this is the place with the roll-up garage door but no garage.
∙ Listing: 5 Winfield (2/1.5) – $749,000 [5winfield.com] [MLS]
I looked at 5 Winfield a couple of weeks ago. Very interesting house but very quirky. It seems like a work in progress but the agent indicated that the seller was done. It’s not quite finished. The private deck was definitely the highlight but the master bedroom with the roll-up garage door doesn’t seem to have a closet. Everything was done with recycled materials. The big drawback was lack of parking and a lot of stairs to the front door. I’m actually surprised though that it’s not in escrow yet because it does have loads of charm.
I lived up the street on Winfield and parking in that area is imposs… I would only live there with a motorcycle. Closest bus is Mission which is a bear to walk up/back to during a winter rainstorm.
Definitely interesting. Also quite small. Some odd material choices; it does seem unfinished. Perhaps purposefully, but nails half sticking out. And, an odd obsession with electrical outlets was in evidence.
Still, good to see something a bit different. So much of the available SF properties are boring.
I think it’s a great place- Viewed it a number of times with my agent- I lived near there- parkings not such a big deal…
thoughtful use of materials and design in a classic bernal space
The sale of 5 Winfield closed escrow on 5/24/11 with a reported contract price of $725,000 (3 percent under asking).
