Delayed due to a technicality, the appeal of the Planning Commission’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) approval for the proposed CityPlace at 935-965 Market will now be heard by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors and general public tomorrow afternoon.
Also on tap for tomorrow’s meeting, an appeal of the Planning Commission’s decision to grant a conditional use permit to Pet Food Express to take over the shuttered Hollywood Video space at 3150 California Street. Woof.

The pet food express thing is a typical SF shizshow.
My local pet store has been rallying people to come defend their rights to price gouge – even though the pet food express location is two miles away.
I have written in to express my support.
I thought chain stores were being discouraged in SF? I guess not if you’re Home Depot, Target and now Pet Food Express… welcome to the new SF aka the burbs!
I agree. The tax dollars I spend at target, home depot, etc should absolutely go to the suburbs. SF has no business opening stores which dont cater to effete, twee, artisanal sensibilities.
When I think about what makes me an urbanite, I think of my membership to the sustainable yarn emporium, and the artisanal mushroom collective.
Nothing says urban to me like vanilla bourbon mini cupcakes made from ingredients sourced within 50 miles!
Instead of highly practical things that we can buy within city limits, we should instead have more cereal restaurants like Schweet Boks so that people will be more inclined to consume and we can build a more sustainable economy in SF.
@Bob- I live in the neighborhood of proposed Pet Express- where/ who do I write to in support?

You think dollars spent at Home Depot are staying in town?
There is parking at the pet food express. Yes! That is great! And for the energy hounds who abound on this site, someone should make an energy chart of the energy involved in the distribution of pet food from farm to manufacturer to SUV to kibble bowl.
hey some of thsoe artisanal mushrooms
have super duper cancer fighting properties!
BNB on geary, is it still the cheapest pet food $$ in town?

One of these things is not like the others…Pet Food Express is a Bay-Area based company, with all 35 stores located in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. From Nevius’ column:
Unfortunately for the incumbent smaller pet food stores, I don’t see how the Supervisors are going to be able to give them what they want.
I can’t believe that we have not seen an attempt to “Save the VHS Rental” stores and at a minimum keep the Hollywood Video facade at the pet food store since like the movie theatre facad at the gym it will remind us of the “historic” Hollywood video tape rental store…
There’s a sign-up sheet at B&B to oppose the proposed Petco at the former Walgreens space on Geary and 18th(?) Ave. There’s no parking there so I wonder how Petco will make it there. I think if Petco wants to go there, let them.

The tax revenue would.
“The tax revenue would.”
And generally the salaries of employees.

I like the idea of a Home Depot in SF, but I can’t imagine that the location where the employees live will likely be much different than the Colma store. Folks don’t typically stop at the county line when looking for a job.
This will definitely help other retailers in the area though.
Just buy your dog toys and pet food at Amazon.com — good prices and free shipping. It isn’t like you can’t plan your dog’s meal (pour food from bag into bowl) well in advance and stock up.
“Just buy your dog toys and pet food at Amazon.com — good prices and free shipping.”
That might work for dog toys, but pet food is not typically available with free shipping. In fact, most pet products suppliers exempt pet food (and some other heavy items like kitty litter) from free shipping promotions.
@EatTheDog
Still less of a carbon footprint than having kids.
Regardless of whether this store goes in or not, I’m still going to my local pet store 3 blocks away, out of sheer convenience. Even if I have to pay a little bit more I can walk there so it’s worth it.
CityPlace wins the appeal, unanimously:

From the bizjournals.com article : “The development proposes 167 parking spaces.”
Wasn’t the last proposal 198 parking spots ? Did the developer concede a little on parking here ? I know that the original proposal was over 200 spaces.
UPDATE: While the vote wasn’t unanimous as with the CityPlace proposal, the Board of Supervisors also voted to uphold the conditional use permit for a Pet Food Express to open at 3150 California Street.
