“As land zoned for San Francisco’s blue-collar businesses dwindles, one of the city’s most influential supervisors on real estate issues is seeking protection for industrial property across a wide swath of the city.
Supervisor Chris Daly wants developers to replace any industrial space demolished for housing in the Mission, Central Waterfront, south of Market or the Showplace Square/Potrero Hill neighborhoods.
Developers will be required to replace the lost space by allowing industrial uses in their residential buildings or pay $125 per square foot to a city-run replacement fund, according to legislation that will be heard in committee as soon as this week.”
[Editor’s Note: And a sentence that says a lot: “Following seven years of debate, city officials are getting closer to finalizing zoning options for the Eastern Neighborhoods.”]

  1. This guy is one of the key reasons SF is falling behind other prominent cities around the world. For someone who was educated at Duke, he certainly doesn’t have a clue how economic fundamentals work.

  2. He never graduated from Duke. I find it incredible that a guy like Daly could get elected to any office anywhere in the United States. District 6 in San Francisco must be the only place where that could possibly happen. Where will Daly seek his next office – Pyongyang?

  3. Even if SF did the usual thing with incentives to get industry to make use of the space this still wouldn’t make any sense. At least we know that individuals can still make a difference in politics.

  4. Daly has the be the biggest moron on earth. What is he thinking? And who the hell elected him? Says A LOT about our city.

  5. Keep in mind that the only reason why Daly wins is because the city has gerimandered District 6, so that it lumps affluent areas like Mission Bay and Rincon Hill with poor areas like the Tenderloin. The sad thing is that Daly has successfully convinced the impoverished Tenderloin inhabitants that he is doing good for them.

  6. I know we San Franciscans bear a large burden in protecting everything from panhandlers to poorly built historical structures, but now we’re supposed to “save the industry”, too? Why is Daly picking a battle that was lost long ago?
I’m going out on a limb here, but I’ve always supposed that most of SF’s homeless are registered to vote in this district and Daly makes sure they vote according to their/his interests. Not sure if that’s the case, or how many of them actually vote, but it seems to me the only plausible explanation for his continued presence at City Hall.

  7. Daly’s people practically carried the SRO residents to the polls in order to secure his win. It was disgusting, like everything else about him.
Perhaps his next gig can be in Cuba – after all, that’s where he met his foulmouthed wife.

  8. I believe a lot of folks living in District 6 who work for a living are too busy with their jobs, families, and otherwise trying to keep their sanity – but they should be paying more attention to their elected officials than what they are now. It is too bad Nixon and others have convinced many Americans that their participation in the governing of their local/state/federal government just doesn’t matter. It certainly does matter.

  9. I do not understand why someone doesn’t start a recall petition against Chris Daly. Once people start moving into the new buildings South of Market would be a good time, because none of them would support him.

  10. You know, I always wonder about these “…or pay into the FUND.” They want it for this use, and they have it for when an entity removes rental units from the market. I think you can do it for BMR’s if you are a developer, though not sure. Where does this money go? How is it allocated? If $125/SF goes into some replacement fund, who replaces what?

  11. Well, now you know why housing is so expensive.
Taxes paid by businesses always flow through to the consumer.
Daly the Idiot is looking to increase the cost to buy a place $125 more per square foot.
    Duh.

  12. Never forget that Daly controls the Mission Housing Development Corp to which I am sure all this money will be pushed.
As for how this guy got elected, well Hitler was elected too.

  13. I live in the ‘loin. A lot of people down here there are born anarchist bomb-throwers. Life is boring sometimes and we’re all going to die anyway, so we might as well go out in flames, especially if we can bring down the establishment with us. I think that sort of attitude explains a lot of Daly’s support, and the support of other demagogues as well. I’m financially independent myself (dotcommer) so when the system crashes I’ll just bail and go somewhere else… Irresponsibility is a way of life down here in Polk Gulch.

  14. This is why I hate. hate. hate. Chris Daly. HATE. He is my supervisor. I did not vote him but I am sorry, San Francisco that my district is so full of idiots.

  15. You all bitch about Daly, but the only reason he has any influence at all is because he can often get 5 other supervisors to vote for him.
I remember city wide supervisor elections, when every singe one of them was in Slick Willie’s pocket. No thanks.
I will take an honest guy I disagree with like Daly over a the scum that used to run this city any day.
