Harrison Street Development Site

Having filed a preliminary application for development with San Francisco’s Planning Department, Cresleigh Development is proposing to build a 478,000-square-foot office building, a 406,000-square-foot residential tower and a 300-room hotel on five parcels along the south side of Harrison Street stretching from 400 Second Street to 665 Harrison.

According to the San Francisco Business Times, Skidmore Owings & Merrill has been hired as the architect, restaurants and retail would line the streets, and the development would incorporate the existing historic building at 645 Harrison.

  1. Glad to hear 645 will be incorporated rather than demolished. I’ve always liked the look of that building. It’s also promising to hear SOM is involved. Can’t wait to see their designs.

  2. Turin:
I’m also quite glad 645 will be kept. It was built in the mid 40s for A. Carlisle & Co., Printers, Lithographers, Stationers. When it was originally built, it had only three floors, the fourth floor was added later.
I also hope that 400 2nd St will be kept. It’s a great turn-of-the-century warehouse that grew out of the expansion of railway spurs in SOMA. When it was built, the space for 645 Harrison was a mound of rock.
The permits however call for demolition of the “4-to-1 story buildings” which might include 400 2nd.

  3. Awesome project – anything that adds more folks to the area is great, and I especially like anything that will help wall off the freeway more. It’d be great to eventually have a highrise wall along both sides, so that eventually the location of the freeway is almost impossible to notice from mid-block on either Bryant or Harrison.

  4. Great, my building faces hawthorne, if 1.5 years of jackhammers wasn’t good enough coming from 680 folsom, I can look forward to this!

  5. When “unknown developers” are proposing “sweeping” developments of multiple towers is it possible that we are witnessing the beginnings of a bubble forming?

  6. Is the developer “Cresleigh” the same company as “Cresleigh Homes” in Sacramento? This would be very surprising if it was.

  7. I live less than 1/2 block from this site and am very encouraged by the prospects of this development. So what if there will be construction activity for a couple of years. That’s all part of living in an ever growing and changing urban environment. If you want peace and quiet, move to the ‘burbs.

  8. ^God I hope so. I’d love to get a huge amount of overbuilding and then a nice little drop in prices for a few years. It would really help the city a lot to massively overbuild (though I’m very leery that that’s in fact what is going to happen here).

  9. Morgan: Yes, same developer. The LLC that owns the properties has a mailing address that is the same as Cresleigh Homes (their SF office).

  10. Serge – thanks for the history on those two buildings. I love learning the background and past lives of our many historic structures. It’s very much appreciated!

  11. With regards to anon’s comment, didn’t the planning department block/comment on a project a couple of years ago saying it would “block motorists views” on the freeway?

  12. Hey, just wondering if there is any news on this project. I live right in the area and am very interested in following how this develops. Thanks for all the great info!
