Built in 1948, the shuttered Buon Gusto Sausage Factory at 535 Green Street was once the largest sausage and salami producing facility in the west.
The 8,600-square-foot building, which is in need of work and includes a 4,000-square-foot basement, sits on an 11,000-square-foot lot in the middle of North Beach.
While the building has been identified as a potential historic resource, its parcel, which includes the adjacent parking lot, is zoned for development up to 40 feet in height, with housing allowed above the ground floor.
And the property is now on the market with a $6.95 million price tag, touting “Great Development Potential!”
If this is developed into condos the new owners will complain about noise from the bars across the street like the condos were there first. Please be merciful…this is one of the most unique and historic blocks in San Francisco.
I lived in North Beach for eleven years, and I dreamed of owning this building. The dream will continue until I have an extra “7 figures” laying around…..
Umm mold-ripened San Francisco salami with sourdough bread. The old school lives on in our hearts
