Purchased for $1,350,000 in 2007 and taken down to the studs, behind the Art Deco façade at 3944 21st Street a contemporary Eureka Valley home has been constructed.
Expanded in the remodeling to four bedrooms with four and one-half baths and designed to capture the views from a couple of decks, or simply while lounging in bed:
And the master bedroom’s closet isn’t too shabby either.

Oh! A deco house in SF. Can’t have that! Must be taken down to the stubs instantly and built up with squirts from the ‘dwell’ tube!
Squirt! Squirt!
Now we can sell for top dollar to the (formerly suburban) tech millionaires.
Ugh.
The outside and the views are wonderful, but like what lark said, the inside is generic and mismatched. Style directions aside, many of the permanent finishing (floor, tile, cabinetry, stone) have mismatched undertones and/or insufficient tonal contrast, and therefore they do not work together.
That rug in the kitchen looks like a bad staging play to either neutralize the room or to minimize the wood. The soffit details are distracting as well.
I hate these “down to the studs” remodels. A good architect/designer can modernize a property without losing the spirit of the original design.
Despite the complaints expressed above, I’d be quite happy if someone forced me to live here.
Say what you want about a down to the studs remodel but this place needed it. I toured it in 2006-7 the day after a rainstorm and there was a puddle in the corner of the living room. Where were the stagers to thrown a rug over that flaw? Hopefully the remodel also repaired the flat roof. The rest of the house was a bit worn out. The Deco motif on the interior was already compromised by 1980s era neo-deco embellishments so nothing much lost there. They preserved the streamline deco facade which is its most important aspect. Views are good but as I recall they are somewhat boxed in by the adjacent houses.
If memory serves me right the lower level served as a sex den for the former owner so this place has eros-mojo.
It is an a really nice block of 21st. My guess is a quick sale.
Need to view but it seems like someone is asking 3.25 for a 2.5 house.
“If memory serves me right the lower level served as a sex den for the former owner so this place has eros-mojo”
Original pre-AIDs sex den? This place should have been given landmark status!
Love the facade. It’s a pity there was zero attempt on the inside to connect the two…
@Milkshake: A third story was added in the (2008?) renovation– the top floor views are quite nice and the ground floor has been cleaned up.
I generally like it. The exterior is wonderful, of course. A few odd design choices inside, but that could be fixed. Yep, quick sale near asking.
Milkshake, I think you are mistaken. The former sex den is the house on the corner next door on Collingwood. Nasty until it got flipped a few years back. Still has the peephole in the garage door!
Say what you will about the design choices. Amazing views from all 3 floors and lots of bells and whistles. Sorry haters, this what the market wants. Predict a quick sale.
Wow. Milkshake of Despair is pretty much never accurate on here. How wpuld he/she like it if he were to sell a property and have someone make up some shady rumor? Yuck.
“…pretty much never accurate…” … really? Care to back that accusation up? And what’s wrong with sex? Most people consider that a positive.
The master closet is silly. If you can close off the whole space (as it appears you can), why put door on the individual closets?
“Where did I put that green shirt. Oh, yeah, behind the white door.”
Is avocado green back again?
Yuck.
Wow, why so much negativity has to exist in this world is beyond me. I saw this house in person yesterday and it is breathtaking! I love the celadon green in the kitchen, ties in with the gorgeous tiles and other accents througout the house. The closet is amazing, acting as a hallway btw the master, bath, and kids room; while protecting all your clothes from the outside elements is genius. I would love to live here.
That negativity is just envy. Pay no attention to it.
Four bedrooms is the new three bedrooms. Art deco is wonderful and too bad SF did not preserve more of it…
I think the current sellers did a fantastic job on their renovation. The rear of the house takes full advantage of outdoor space(s) and panoramic views. I doubt a “deco” design throughout would have accomplished what they did. It’s pretty telling that the owners appreciate modern living and design as opposed to a design of yesteryear. I’m sure some future buyer will appreciate the house as it shows today.
This closed for 3.75 million. 15% over asking.
Going through some old files and found I actually bid on this place in 2007.
