Bjarke Ingels Group (aka BIG) has been selected to design the development of 950-974 Market Street, a proposed arts, housing, hotel and retail complex that could include a 250-room hotel, 316 residential units, 15,000 square feet of retail, and a 75,000-square-foot arts building at the corner of Market and Turk.

Working with the Thacher Family and the 950 Center for Arts & Education, Group I envisions 950-974 Market Street becoming “the gateway to Mid-Market” and “the culmination of a long-held vision for a thriving creative community in the heart of San Francisco that brings together the arts, technology, tourism, local culture and mixed income housing.”

  1. Wow. Interesting choice. BIG is a very conceptual firm with some pretty wild ideas. How about a ski area where you ski down the sloped roofs of the buildings to get to the lifts?
Not all that many completed projects, but they are certainly a bold choice. In some ways, I wish they were doing a Mission Bay project where some innovation is sorely needed. They have done a few very striking apartment buildings. http://www.big.dk/#projects-vm
I always complain that SF has really boring buildings, so this might be a pleasant surprise. Or a total disaster after going through the tortuous approval process.

  2. The choices of BIG for this site and Snøhetta for the MOMA expansion as well as the Warriors arena are bold moves that I frankly didn’t expect out of SF. Way to go, City!
