2001 Market Street Site: 5/24/12 (www.SocketSite.com
Demolition and excavation permits have been granted, as a plugged-in tipster reports, a construction fence now surrounds the former S&C Ford dealership at Market and Dolores, and the Prado Group has started clearing the way for 2001 Market Street to rise.

Once again, an eight story building along Market Street (stepping down to four stories at 14th Street) with 82 residential units over a 31,000 square foot Whole Foods and 101 parking spaces will rise on the site over the next 19 months if all goes as planned.

UPDATE: Speaking of going as planned, from the comments:

There have been rumors floating around that Whole Foods has pulled out of this project, having decided that building new stores is not cost-effective when compared to rehabilitating existing buildings. Their withdrawal would endanger the entire project. Anyone plugged-in to be able to confirm or deny that?

At this point, that’s a rumor we can neither confirm nor deny. Readers?
UPDATE: Consider the rumor busted. From the Prado Group: “…Whole Foods is happening. Look forward to the store opening in fall 2013.” Pass it along.

  1. 2. It wouldn’t bother me one bit to lose the Whole Foods store to gain a Traders Joe’s.
I would think Trader Joe’s would find this to be a great location, with lots of neighborhood support.

  3. @Wondering – Whole Foods isn’t building this store, they’re simply leasing the space. Are you saying that Whole Foods prefers to buy old buildings rather than lease in new? Lease in old rather than lease in new? Not sure what you mean here.

  4. Even better- an independent grocer (a la Rainbow) that cares about local organic produce at a reasonable price (too much to ask?)

  5. ^ @SF – too much to ask. Aside from Rainbow (who obviously already have a store nearby), can you think of a local organic grocer that could use 30,000 square feet? Nope, didn’t think so.
Whole Foods is an obvious user. I don’t know if the 31K space is selling space or total space, but TJ’s aren’t that big (average 8-12K, as do Frsh n Easy for that matter) I suppose the space could be subdivided if Whole Foods pulled out, but I’m hoping they don’t.

  6. market street is getting very exciting. You can trace a chain of development sites that are currently or soon to be under construction, from the “hole in the ground” at Market and Noe all the way down to 10th and Market. Quite a Renaissance.

  7. @Wondering and @SocketSite. This is the first I’ve heard of such a silly rumor, but let me just put it to rest, Whole Foods is happening. Look forward to the store opening in fall 2013. And @anon is correct. Whole Foods isn’t building the store, we are!
    [Editor’s Note: Cheers!]

  8. Can’t wait to see this great project completed! lots of new housing, great location and a Whole Foods!!

  9. The rumor never made sense… WF isn’t building the building. They are probably leasing and most likely get some build out monies from the developer.

  10. Whole Foods employees are all queuing (queueing?) to go there so assume the lease is already signed.
