With the first CityTarget in San Francisco having opened its doors last week, Target has announced that San Francisco’s second CityTarget in the City Center development at Geary and Masonic will open in October 2013, a little later than originally targeted.

Now about the underdeveloped 5.4-acre Muni yard directly across the street

  1. Too bad the whole site can’t be redeveloped to include housing. I’ve parked behind there while waiting for someone in the ER at Kaiser and it looks like something out of the suburbs.

  2. Agree totally with Marten — this site should be redeveloped completely. This is a horrifically designed complex where you need to drive between even adjacent stores, and the face to basically every street is unwelcoming and foreboding. Replacing with one of those outdoor-style street-corner malls like you see in Los Angeles (esp. like the one with a Target at the corner of Santa Monica & La Brea) that has a pedestrian component and upper-level housing would make way more sense for such a prominent and transit-friendly corner.

  3. All I can say is IF they want people from all parts of the city to shop there, they better have nice extior and interior decor that are warm and inviting during the day and night. Part of what what Keven said is right. that part about,”Replacing with one of those outdoor-style street-corner malls like you see in Los Angeles(esp. like the one with a Target at the corner of Santa Monica & La Brea) that has a pedestrian component and upper-level housing would make way more sense for such a prominent and transit-friendly corner.” That is one idea to think about for the people behind the talks and drew up the idea. Another thing is to look at San Bruno Towne Center, Colma Meto Center and where the Colma Target is. That is to see and learn what has worked for them. So that City Center is NOT a failed shopping center, like that one on 16th Potrero going toward S.F. General and how this one is now. San Francisco resdiants that live in the Outter Sunset, Park Side,Lake Merced area and 12th Ave-27th Ave of the Richmond District, would go toSan Bruno Towne Center, Colma Meto Center and where the Colma Target is to shop. So if they want San Francisco resdiants to NOT shop at those place then that is what has to be done.

  4. Well you can always dream about how something might be completely redeveloped but it isn’t going to happen anytime soon at City Center. Why would Target want them to demo and rebuild the whole place further delaying their opening? With Target willing to move in now, the owner of the property is going to be happy as I’m sure they will be making a nice profit with those spaces leased again.
Target will be successful there. Mervyn’s was successful there, it was one of their top stores, its their other stores that brought them down. Target used to own Mervyn’s before they sold it off, so they are very familar with the location and they know it will do just fine without them having to wait for some developer to come in and take five plus years to get something else built.

  5. Why would Target want them to demo and rebuild the whole place further delaying their opening?
It wouldn’t be Target demo’ing and rebuilding. It would be the developer, and the benefit to them would be in being able to sell a boatload of housing or extract value in other ways.

  6. Oh, I didn’t realize the property was sold to a developer that then decided not to develop the property. Must have missed that.
