Transbay Terminal 12/7/10 (www.SocketSite.com)
With the eastern bus ramp and overpasses long gone and Phase 3 of the Tansbay Terminal demolition underway, the wrecking ball is going to work on the main terminal which should be completely demolished by February at which point the fourth and final demolition phase kicks off and the western bus ramps from Harrison to Howard will fall.
Over 6,500 tons of concrete from the demolition will be crushed and reused on site in the construction of San Francisco’s new Transbay Transit Center. And smiles abound on those walking in the sunlight where an overpass once loomed.

  1. It is really amazing how different Beale, Fremont and 1st streets feel with the overpasses gone.
I’ve found myself taking deliberate detours down these streets on my morning and evening commutes to admire the changes.
The sunshine and being able to see down the street with an uninterrupted is definitely… what’s a word for “un-claustrophobic”

  2. I haven’t been there since it’s been completely removed, but I did happen to walk by while it was being torn down, which was pretty fun to watch!

  3. The same thing happened when the Central Freeway was torn down. I was living at 14th/Mission at the time and for a glorious few months there were uninterrupted views down Mission and Valencia. Felt like a brand-new neighborhood.
Then I watched gangbangers shoot at each other from my window on a weeknight and we moved to Ashbury Heights.

  4. I was wondering where did the rainbow lights went, it’s nice to see natural light in the area!
On another hand, I’m looking into BayCrest Towers condos at 201 Harrison. It was an option plan for High-Speed Rail Terminal. Anyone has comment on this building?

I have a friend who lives in this building and have gone over to visit a few times. It’s decent enough but unremarkable. Very early 90’s look and feel. He is almost living under the bay bridge so the noise is significant. On the plus side it’s probably the most affordable building in the RH area. If you can afford it I’d consider looking elsewhere.
I also believe there may be pending construction which would impact common areas.
